KUALA LUMPUR: Team LZJ have confirmed that head coach Yeoh Kay Bin will not be extending his contract as he looks to pursue personal opportunities in the coming year, bringing to a close a one-year stint marked by injury setbacks and limited competitive exposure for Lee Zii Jia.
Kay Bin joined Team LZJ in December last year, replacing Wong Tat Meng after the latter's contract expired.
The 45-year-old former international is a respected figure on the coaching circuit and previously spent time in China under the guidance of legendary coach Li Mao.
In a statement, the team expressed their appreciation for Kay Bin's contribution, describing him as a steady and influential presence, particularly during a difficult season in which Zii Jia struggled with multiple injuries that disrupted momentum and tournament plans.
Zii Jia paid tribute to the departing coach, acknowledging both the professional growth and the frustration that accompanied a year short on results.
"I have nothing but the utmost respect for Coach Kay Bin who has been by my side the past year," Zii Jia was quoted in the statement.
"I have learned new things from him and I myself am frustrated at the limited opportunity to showcase what we had done in training.
"That is why I understand Coach Kay Bin's desire to seek something else for himself and I wish him all the best."
Despite the end of the formal arrangement, Kay Bin will continue to play a role in the short term, having agreed to remain in Zii Jia's corner for the upcoming Malaysia Open from Jan 6-11.
To fill the vacancy, Team LZJ announced that Liew Daren will return to the setup in a coaching capacity.
Liew, a pioneering member of the team, recently completed a 12-month suspension imposed by the Badminton World Federation for betting-related activities committed between 2018 and 2021, with his ban ending on Dec 20. - FMT
