No by-election for Subang seat, says EC

EC chairman Ramlan Harun says the commission was notified about the seat’s vacancy by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul yesterday.

Wong Chen, who had served as the Subang MP since May 2018, announced his resignation yesterday.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The Election Commission (EC) has confirmed that no by-election will be held for the Subang parliamentary constituency following the resignation of PKR’s Wong Chen as its MP.

In a statement, EC chairman Ramlan Harun said the commission was notified about the seat’s vacancy by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul yesterday.

“Based on Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution, the Dewan Rakyat speaker has informed the EC that there is no need to fill the casual vacancy.

“Accordingly, no by-election for the P.104 Subang parliamentary constituency will be held,” it said.

Wong, who had served as the Subang MP since May 2018, announced his resignation yesterday, saying he had handed his resignation letter to Johari last Wednesday.

He said the timing of his resignation was intended to give parliamentary officers three working days to prepare for the vacancy.

Wong, who previously represented Kelana Jaya from 2013 to 2018, said he and Johari had agreed not to disclose details of his resignation until yesterday.

Wong was among three PKR MPs who had recently been barred from accessing the MyKhas portal, which manages special constituency allocations.

The other two were Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail and Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung.

The three MPs had attended the launch of Bersama in May, a party now led by former PKR leaders Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. -FMT
