DPM Muhyiddin : UPSR remains and PMR to change

SYDNEY: The Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) will be changed to be a school-based assessment examination beginning 2016 while the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) will remain as it is but with improved syllabus, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Deputy Prime Minister said a committee that was formed to study both examinations had concluded that major changes were needed for it to stay relevant in the current environment.

He said the changes took into account the proposal to replace both examinations with school-based assessments.

“The proposal was discussed in two roundtable sessions which in general, agreed that the PMR should be changed to be a school-based assessment examination.

“As for the UPSR, it was concluded that its effectiveness needed to be improved with a better syllabus,” he told reporters here Saturday.

Muyhiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the changes could not be implemented immediately as it would burden students and teachers and disrupt the current education system.

“It surely cannot be done next year because the education system has a cycle where it is impossible for students under the present one to immediately sit a new form of examination.

“We reckon that it will take six years for such a major transformation to really work as it involves changes of syllabus and books as well as training for teachers so that they will not be thinking too much about examination issues,” he said.

Muhyiddin added that pilot projects for school-based assessments had been carried out at some 550 schools since 2008.

The Malaysia Examination Syndicate, he said, would be roped in to ensure the school-based assessment examination would be carried out fairly.
