Former MCA leader Dr Lee Chong Meng's membership in PKR has hit a snag. PKR said it views with seriousness the recent revelation that Chong Meng was elected the Bukit Bintang division chief while he was still an MCA member.
"Our political bureau has discussed the case and we are waiting for some feedback from our Election task force and Secretariat before we make a final decision," PKR deputy president Syed Husin Ali said in a statement.
According to Syed Husin, PKR was disturbed to learn that Chong Meng had only just resigned from the MCA, where he had also been the Bukit Bintang chief.
Quit MCA on Wednesday
Based on a Bernama report, Lee said he sent in his resignation letter to the MCA headquarters on Wednesday afternoon after returning from overseas.
"I was initially reluctant to quit the party. When (MCA president Datuk Seri) Dr Chua announced that I would be suspended for allegedly misusing government funds, I've decided that that's it, I will leave," Bernamareported him as saying.
According to Syed Husin, this meant that Chong Meng had applied for and was granted PKR membership while he was still an MCA member, but did not inform PKR.
"This is not right," said Syed Husin. "Even more serious is that Chong Meng won the Bukit Bintang division chief post without contest.
According to the Bernama report, Chong Meng fell out with Soi Lek, who wanted to suspend him for three years for allegedly misusing government funds.
Chong Meng has denied this, saying that the RM60,000 allocation was for the Chinese New Year activities for which he himself had to fork out an additional RM40,000 because the amount was insufficient.
Of late, there has been concern among PKR members about the sincerity of recruits from the BN parties, with many grassroots upset at the way former Umno leader Zaid Ibrahim has been attacking PKR, his main rival for the deputy presidential contest Azmin Ali and even de-facto head Anwar Ibrahim himself.
