You won again! PAS-PKR tell Malaysians after GST about-turn

Pakatan Rakyat-led anti-GST rally - stand up for your rights!
KUALA LUMPUR - Calling it a people’s victory, PAS and Parti Keadilan Rakyat congratulated Malaysians for successfully forcing the government to make a U-turn on the implementation of the controversial Goods and Services Tax (GST).

PAS information chief Idris Ahmad said the decision showed that the Barisan Nasional government was aware of the repercussion in the coming general election should they go ahead with the GST.

Idris said the government should not look for shortcuts to increase its revenue by introducing the GST as it affected every layer of the society especially low income earners.

“The government should find a remedy in their financial management first so that they can be more transparent and combat corruption," said Idris, adding that government wastage had rendered it to become desperate "to the extent that it wanted to implement GST"..

Idris also called on the Federal government to be prepared to learn from Pakatan Rakyat states who proved better managers of state finance.

Yesterday, the Finance ministry said the government was postponing the implementation of GST, saying the decision was to enable it "to engage inclusively with all segments of rakyat pertaining to the GST".

"The Government will take into account the interest and welfare of the society to ensure the implementation of GST is well received," a statement by the ministry said.

Meanwhile, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the government's decision was a clear sign that it could no longer afford to ignore dissenting voices.

Dr Wan Azizah pointed out that decision brought into question whether the government had previously approved other policies which burdened the people. - Harakahdaily
