BN's win In Galas due to Ku Li factor, people's preference for BN!

Cash handouts, fake ballot papers marred the Galas poll
GUA MUSANG - The personality of the Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and the people's acceptance of the Barisan Nasional (BN) as the catalyst for change in Kelantan were the primary factors for the coalition's victory in the Galas state by-election Thursday.

The BN's strength in Galas was influenced by the deeds made by Tengku Razaleigh, a Kelantan prince who started the development of Gua Musang, when he was Finance Minister, to the extent that the area became the entry point to Kelantan from Kuala Lumpur and the states in the West Coast through Cameron Highlands.

Tengku Razaleigh, fondly referred to as "Ku Li", is a respected leader and the longest serving Member of Parliament who was first elected 41 years ago in 1969.

The by-election for the Galas state seat was held following the death of the incumbent Assemblyman from PAS, Che Hashim Che Sulaima, 46, who died of cancer on Sept 27.

The Galas by-election saw a straight fight between the BN candidate, Abdul Aziz Yusoff and Dr Zulkefli Mohamed from PAS with the former winning with a big majority of 1,190 votes. In the 2008 general election, Che Hashim won with a majority of only 646 votes.

It was the first victory for the BN in a by-election in Kelantan after the by-election for the state seat of Manik Urai on July 14, last year.

With the victory, BN now controls all the State Assembly seats in the Gua Musang Parliamentary constituency namely Nenggiri, Paloh and Galas. The win also raises the number of State Assembly seats held by the BN in Kelantan from six to seven, while PAS loses one seat from 38 to 37 and its coalition partner, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has one.

Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had given a free hand to Tengku Razaleigh to decide on the type of campaigning when the latter was made the BN election director for Galas because the Gua Musang MP had a better understanding of the attitude and needs of the electorate as well as the logistics and dispersal of the population before drawing up an election strategy.

The new campaign strategy adopted by the BN in approaching the 11,553 voters in Galas had been well received by the electorate. Unlike in the previous elections, BN no longer organised elaborate programmes by using top leaders as 'bait' to draw the voters.

In fact, the factor of a new BN candidate, Abdul Aziz, had also played a role as he was close to the people from his working days as manager of the Operations Office of the Kelantan Selatan Development Authority (Kesedar), a federal agency responsible for the development of Hulu Kelantan.
