“How can we be sure he or she will vote according to our wishes? It’s a personal right in a democracy,” he said, raising doubt on the EC’s idea to allow another person to cast ballots on behalf of a registered voter.
“To me, it’s not something that is workable,” added the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in a news conference here.
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof told The Malaysian Insider yesterday the proposal would be among some 30 amendments to election laws in the country that the commission hoped to table in the coming Parliament sitting in March.
The proposed amendments, he said, would likely be presented to the Cabinet next month and, once approved, should be implemented in time for the 13th general election.
Koh, who is also a member of the Cabinet, appeared surprised to learn about the EC’s proposal today, saying he had only read the news today.
The minister in charge of measuring each ministry’s performance through a set list of national key result areas (NKRA) told reporters he would not comment further until he had seen the proposal.
“I’m not turning it down,” he added. - Malaysian Insider
