KUCHING, April 6 — There will be multi-cornered contests in almost two-thirds of the 71 seats in next week’s Sarawak state election, and for the first time since 1987, all seats will be contested.
A record total of 213 candidates have been accepted to contest in the April 16 election.
A SNAP candidate was the only person to have his nomination papers rejected after he, his proposer and his seconder failed to put their signatures on all the necessary documents.
A widely spread rumour that a PAS candidate had won uncontested in the Muara Tuang seat was quashed by EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusoff at a press conference here.
The candidate had supposedly objected to her BN opponent whom she claimed had not submitted his financial statement for the 2006 elections.
“After checking the EC’s records, we found that he did submit his statement. So the objection was turned down,” Abdul Aziz said.
