'Irresponsible wives the cause of extramarital affairs'

He blames women who neglect their husbands for the rise in extramarital affairs.

The high occurrence of extramarital affairs is due to "wives who neglect their responsibilities" to their husbands, the MP for Pasir Mas (Ind) Ibrahim Ali claims.

Therefore, he asked in a supplementary question during Question Time in Parliament, what was the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) doing about educating wives on their responsibilities?

NONE"There are times when husbands have urges (ada keinginan)... but when they come home to their wives, they will say, 'wait, I'm cooking', or 'wait, I'm getting ready to visit relatives'.

"In Islam, wives are supposed to stop everything to fulfil their husbands' demands," Ibrahim said.

"Husbands driving home after work see things that are sexually arousing (menaikan semangat) and go to their wives to ease their urges (semangat).

"So much so there are husbands who go to private places (tempat-tempat yang sulit) to satisfy their urges and then (unsavoury) videos are exposed... this is why I want a proper explanation as to whether wives understand their roles," he added, taking a potshot at a video clip showing a man resembling an opposition leader with a sex worker.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mashitah Ibrahim shot down the question, saying intimacy between married couples was based on the level of understanding between the couples.

NONE"I can't completely agree with you... men must understand this too - (just because) you come home after work and you are aroused (naik semangat), your wife must stop all her work and please you," she said.

Ibrahim had also raised the issue of polygamy and urged Muslim men to marry widows or divorcees as their second wives.

Mashitah responded that more exposure was needed on the issue of polygamy for Muslim couples.

DAP activist and chairperson of the party's gender justice and social development bureau in Penang, Steven Sim Chee Keong, urged the prime minister and all other male parliamentarians to come out in full force to censure Ibrahim for denigrating women.

Sim, who is also a councillor with the Seberang Perai Municipal Council, said Ibrahim seemed to be competing with Umno MPs "to outdo each other in being the most sexist in the Parliament."

"Previously, Ibrahim Ali has said that women have very strong sexual urges, which caused men to marry many wives.

"It is appalling that Ibrahim Ali seem to put the blame of social ills and domestic problems squarely on women and sex," said Sim.

"Ibrahim Ali's total disrespect for women only demonstrates his narrow, exclusive and xenophobic worldview, not least reflected through his involvement in the ultra-right wing group Perkasa." - Malaysiakini
