KUCHING: Amid nationwide Christian anger over the Malay bible issue, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Idris Jala claimed today that ties between Putrajaya and the church are on the mend.
Jala said this after a meeting between Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and the heads of Sarawak churches here.
Jala, who was also present, described the meeting as “a good starting point” to a viable long-term solution to the strained federal-church ties.
The meeting took place amid an ongoing state election with close to 50% of the population Christians. The ruling coalition is struggling to maintain its popularity.
President of the Association of Churches Sarawak (ACS) Bolly A Lapok, however, backed the stand taken by the Christian Federation of Malaysia that it would be wise not to hastily adopt the Cabinet-endorsed 10-point resolution to the conflict.
