'Chinese stay home' remark just advice, says Ibrahim

Perkasa head Ibrahim Ali said his call for the Chinese community to stock up on food for July 9 was a mere advice, not a threat.

The remark was made in a Perkasa mini-rally on Sunday against the Bersih 2.0 rally which will be held on July 9 in Kuala Lumpur, to create awareness about the need for electoral reforms.

NONE"When I said the Chinese community had better stay at home and (see) if they need to stock up on food, what does that mean? That means usually when there are protests, I don't see the Chinese joining in.

"The Chinese never take part in street demonstrations as far as I'm concerned. This demonstration, I believe it's going to be Malays from PAS (who are) going to participate... And Umno too. We (Perkasa) too will have one.

"So the clash is between Malays and Malays.

"In order to avoid it from spreading to other races, I said, it's (better) for the Chinese to stay back. That's all," said the Pasir Mas MP (above).

NONETwo days ago, Ibrahim had pledged to hold a Perkasa 'Peace March' on July 9, further threatening thatchaos would ensue if the coalition for free and fair elections Bersih 2.0 did not cancel its planned mega rally.

"Imagine, ladies and gentlemen, if the Bersih rally is not called off and they go ahead with it - if they don't cancel it on July 8 or 9 - I believe the Chinese community, many of them, will have to stock up on food at home. Anything can happen on that day," he was reported to have said.

Speaking at the Parliament lobby today, Ibrahim lashed out at reporters for allegedly taking his speech out of context to sensationalise the issue.

He singled out news site The Malaysian Insider for distorting his comments.

'Bloody idiot'

Ibrahim, who was clearly angry, repeatedly said he was willing to be arrested if his comments were deemed seditious.

NONE"I have been detained twice under ISA (Internal Security Act). So I know whether what I did was good or bad. You mean the statements of others are not seditious?

"Then, (those attending) the assembly and asking others to attend is not seditious?" he asked.

Reiterating that he was straightforward and willing to admit when he was wrong, he again yelled that his warning of a clash on July 9 was being "twisted" when all he was doing was to "prevent things from happening".

"The Malaysian Insider twisted my words to say that if the Chinese come out there will be problems and we will attack them and that is why they should stay at home. I did not mean that... that is the meaning of the idiot of The Malaysian Insider," he said.

At this point, Ibrahim was interrupted by a man wearing a Parliament visitor's tag and claiming to be a member of the public who said, "you are not advising, you are threatening the Chinese".

"I am talking to the reporter. You want to talk to me, you talk to me after this. Do not interrupt me. I can see you after this... bloody idiot," he replied angrily.

'Ploy to topple gov't'

Ibrahim also alleged that he had received information that there is a ploy to overthrow the present federal government once the Bersih rally becomes unruly and chaos erupts.

NONE"This is what I anticipate. I was told by some groups who came to see me that they were told to bring food along when they come out on July 9.

"So what happens when things go out of control? They want to create a temporary government and they will present a list of names of those who will take over," he said, rubbishing assurances from organisers that the rally will be peaceful.

"They want to set up a temporary government and there is this list of names of those who should helm the temporary government," he added. - Malaysiakini
