King: Intensify efforts to become developed nation by 2020

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin believes that the country's economy will continue to grow if efforts are intensified to achieve the vision of turning Malaysia into a developed, high-income nation by 2020.

The King said that from the economic aspect, the country's position was encouraging, and investments from in and outside the country continued to rise while inflation was at a controlled level.

"The strength and stability of a country depends much on the various institutions that are the pillars of the country's administration.

“Indeed the administrative institutions and strong implementation are among the important elements in creating a developed and respected nation," said Tuanku Mizan in conjunction with his birthday celebration at Istana Negara, here, on Saturday.

"I urge all parties - the government, private sector, non-governmental organisations, mass media and especially the people - to cooperate and work together so that all the plans drawn up can be implemented swiftly and effectively."

Tuanku Mizan said the world today was facing tremendous economic pressure and the biggest challenge was the hike in oil price.

"Malaysia is not spared, and if the situation continues, this phenomenon will not only have a negative impact on the country's economic growth but also on the people's lives due to inflation.

"Nevertheless, I am grateful that the government is still able to cushion the effects of the fuel price increase in the interest of the people's well-being. I am happy that the government has been able to maintain the price of RON 95, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas.

"I also wish to remind traders to cooperate by not taking advantage of the situation by raising the prices of goods as it have would have adverse impact on the people."

Tuanku Mizan said that while the government had spent huge sums of money on providing energy and water supply, it was incumbent upon the people to use these vital resources wisely and avoid wastage.

"We are fortunate to have inherited this beautiful and peaceful land as a result of the efforts and sacrifices of earlier generations.

"I admit that although it's not easy for people of different races and religions to live together peacefully and share everything, Malaysians have shown that diversity is not a problem or hindrance but it is uniqueness and strength. And this strong unity should prevail to be inherited by future generations.

"However, I am sad that there are still quarters who try to disrupt the peace by raising sensitive issues to serve their personal agenda. I believe those who love unity will not be influenced by such ploy to instigate."

Tuanku Mizan also conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims who died in the landslide that hit the Hidayah Al-Taqwa orphanage and religious learning centre in Hulu Langat, Selangor and hoped that it would a lesson for all to be more sensitive towards the environment. "I appreciate and support the commitment of the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in enhancing the people's integrity and in combating corruption.

"The government, I believe, is on the right track by focusing on preventive measures in fighting this scourge. This approach is needed so that the fight against corruption is not short-term but a comprehensive and holistic one."

The King said although Malaysians were fortunate to live a life that was rather comfortable and safe, there was still room for improvement, which called for more government efforts to improve the people's quality of life.

"Let us all ensure that this beloved multiracial country will continue to develop and prosper with the strong unity forged and the continuous development efforts," the King said. - Bernama
