According to a report in the Malay daily today, a team of officers from the department's Islamic education division visited a school at Jalan Kuchai Lama yesterday to interview a Year One pupil.
This was confirmed by the school's headmaster, who declined to disclose further information, said the report.
In his column yesterday, Utusan's assistant chief editor Zaini Hassan claimed that he was told by an ethnic Indian teacher that there are Muslim pupils in his school who can sing Christians songs and recite the story of Jesus Christ's crucifixion.
He was told that they learnt those songs - including 'Yes, I know Jesus loves me' and 'Hari Ini Ku Rasa Bahagia' - from the free English classes being offered by young Christian evangelists every Sunday.
Zaini claimed that the free tuition is a subtle approach to proselytise to Malay schoolchildren from poor families.
On the issue, Umno Seputeh division youth chief Mohd Razlan Muhammad was reported to have claimed that the free tuition classes attended by some 20 schoolchildren started operating six years ago.
The tuition classes are held every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm and most of the schoolchildren are from primary schools in Brickfields and on Jalan Kuchai Lama, he said.
Besides singing religious songs, Razlan said the children are treated with free movies and meals at luxurious restaurants on their birthdays or after they do well in answering questions related to Christianity.
He also claimed that the children are shown video clips about the birth and life of Jesus Christ, followed by quizzes to assess their understanding.
Razlan stressed that preaching non-Islamic religion to Muslim is a violation of Article 11(4) of the federal constitution.
He called on the authority to investigate the matter before it gets worse.
