Fast for democracy and peace

Generation 709 wants the young to participate in a fasting session for democracy and peace

PETALING JAYA: Generation 709, an organisation formed following the Bersih 2.0 rally, is holding a fasting session called “Fast for Democracy and Peace” next Friday.

“Our Muslims friends are already fasting. We urge our young non-Muslim friends to do so as well on that day,” said the movement’s Lee Khai Loon.

The PKR Youth deputy chief added that he would also organise a “sahur” session (pre-dawn meal) at Pelita restaurant near the Kuala Lumpur City Centre at 5.00am for participants in Klang Valley on Friday.

The meal sessions would also be attended by family members of the late Baharuddin Ahmad, who passed away during the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9.

The breaking of fast session would be held in Setiawangsa. The venue, however, had not been confirmed.

The fasting session was meant to urge the government and Election Commission to implement four actions.

First, Generation 709 wanted both the EC and government to comply with Bersih 2.0′s eight-point demand for electoral reforms.

Generation 709 also seeks to have a free and fair legal system, and end oppression against differing political ideologies.

The group also wanted the true cause of deaths involving Customs deputy director Ahmad Sarbaini, Teoh Beng Hock, Baharuddin Ahmad and A Kugan revealed and the culprits punished.

Those interested in participating are required to email their pledge and personal details such as age, contact number and location to GenBersih709@gmail.com.
