Hasan Ali: I am willing to be sacked

Embattled Selangor exco in charge of Islamic religious affairs Dr Hasan Mohd Ali, has said he is ready to be step down if asked to do so over the controversial raid of a church function several days ago.

Hasan told Utusan Malaysia that he is ready to accept “the reality” and made to give up any or all of his posts in defence of the actions of the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) in disrupting a thanksgiving-cum-celebratory fund-raising dinner organised by a welfare NGO on church grounds.

According to Hasan in a statement on Thursday said Jais officials had reason to believe a multiracial dinner held within the compound of the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) in Petaling Jaya on Wednesday night - included efforts to proselytise Christianity among a score of Muslims.

This has been denied by church authorities, with Catholic Bishop Paul Tan Chee Ing decrying the vilification of Christians and the duplicity of the authorities' treatment of the religious community.

Hasan, was until a few months ago Selangor PAS commissioner before losing in the party's recent elections, told Utusan: "I am willing to do anything, including facing the reality that I may be asked to let go of my post as state government executive council member and whatever position (I hold), for the sake of the struggle for what I believe will help the Muslim community, especially in the state of Selangor.”

Declining to speak length on the issue due to the gag order imposed on the matter by Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, Hasan only said the actions of Jais were in line with efforts to promote inter-religious harmony through the defence of the sanctity of Islam.

“If you believe (in the importance) of religious harmony, then the question of the sanctity of the Islamic faith should not be disturbed at all, and that is what I am working for. Is that wrong?” he asked.

Members of PAS' central working committee (CWC) will look into the issue of the church raid at its monthly meeting today in which Hasan is expected to explain the matter. - Malaysiakini
