Karpal: Judge must act on Saiful's TV3 interview

The lead counsel for Anwar Ibrahim in his sodomy case, Karpal Singh, says the presiding judge should act against complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan for his recent interview with TV3.

NONE"I think the judge should do something... judges have a duty, you know, on the spot, to issue a show cause letter. I think that is what the judge should do," Karpal said.

On Tuesday and yesterday, TV3's prime news programme Buletin Utamaaired an exclusive interview with Saiful (left) over his predicament as a result of the case.

The first part of the interview starts with a video of Saiful taking the sacred oath (sumpah laknat) that he was sodomised by Anwar, amid a backdrop of sentimental music.

It then focuses on Saiful, who relates his predicament: "Before I made the police report, I was mentally ready that I will lose everything and my future.

"After swearing the oath, the controversy, condemnation, defamation, lies and diatribe began", is the backdrop narration before Saiful comes on again.

"Challenges wise, there's society's disparage, family, daily life and not having a job, It's difficult to find work," Saiful says.

Karpal declined to elaborate on the matter, pointing out that the case was still in progress.

He was speaking at the Jalan Duta court complex in Kuala Lumpur after interviewing another witness, Pusrawi staff nurse Yazihan Jusoh, with senior lawyer Param Cumaraswamy and Sankara Nair.

Anwar was also present during the interview.

Asked if the defence team would raise Saiful's TV3 interview in court when the trial resumes on Monday, Karpal said that he would first review the interview.

Witness line-up to be decided tomorrow

Earlier, Sankara said two more witnesses were yet to be interviewed, among them an Indonesian maid and a former PKR staff.

They have not been scheduled for tomorrow, which is the last day for the interview, he said.

It appears unlikely that the team will be able to complete the interviews as the trial must proceed on Monday.

Sankara said the team would decide on the witness line-up tomorrow.

"We will decide tomorrow on the witnesses we want to call (from) among those (we have) interviewed," he added.

Anwar is scheduled to enter his defence on Monday. The opposition leader has three options - to testify under oath in the witness stand, testify from the dock where he cannot be cross-examined or choose to remain silent.

Which option will be picked, Sankara said, would be decided on Monday.

Anwar is charged with sodomising Saiful at a Desa Damansara condominium unit between 3.01pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.
