Perkasa calls for Islamic affairs ministry

PASIR MAS, Aug 26 — Datuk Ibrahim Ali today mooted the formation of an Islamic affairs ministry, amid growing allegations of proselytism among Muslims in the country.

The president of the Malay rights lobby said such a ministry was necessary to address issues related to Islam, saying these matters were deserving of more high-level attention.

There is currently no such ministry per se, but Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom is de facto Islamic affairs minister.

“Perkasa suggests that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak seriously think about setting up this ministry, otherwise issues related to Islam cannot be resolved in a more systematic manner,” Ibrahim was quoted by Bernama Online today.

The Pasir Mas MP added that existing Islamic authorities such as the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) lacked the clout to properly deal with such matters.

A raid by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) at an evangelical church in Petaling Jaya on August 3 over suspected proselytism has formed a new flashpoint in Christian-Muslim relations in the country.

Proselytising Muslims is an offence in Malaysia.

Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia also reported recently an allegation that underprivileged Muslims living in a squatter area near Old Klang Road were being proselytised by Christians under the guise of free English classes.

Perkasa customarily takes a hard-line approach to Islamic issues, with Ibrahim threatening a crusade on Christians earlier in May following reports — also by Utusan Malaysia — of a Christian plot to usurp Islam as the religion of the federation.

The right wing group also held a protest against Christians at the National Mosque last week and demanded for a ban on Christian teachers at national schools.
