Cabinet 'did not discuss' Pakatan's demands for PSC

The cabinet did not deliberate on the five pre-conditions set by Pakatan Rakyat for its participation in the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reform.

NONE"The cabinet did not discuss them. They are not important," said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz, when contacted today.

The weekly cabinet meeting this morning also did not touch on the issue of PSC, he added.

Yesterday Pakatan had asked premier Najib Abdul Razak for a guarantee on five issues as a sign of the government's commitment and seriousness on electoral reform.

Without the guarantees, the opposition coalition had warned, it will not participate in the PSC which will be set up at the next Parliament sitting from Oct 3.

azlanAmong the demands was that Najib should decide the date of the next general election in consultation with Pakatan, in order to allow the PSC sufficient time to carry out its duties.

The poll reforms panel was announced on Aug 15 following intense pressure from the opposition and civil society to reform the electoral system.

Important announcement tomorrow

On the reported review of the Internal Security Act (ISA), Nazri disclosed that this too had not been discussed by the cabinet.

Several media reports, quoting sources, had claimed that the Najib administration is mulling a review or even abolition of the draconian law to create momentum ahead of the general election.

Yesterday, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein had denied the possibility of scrapping the law, only reiterating that the government is studying possible amendments to it and several other preventive laws.

He denied recent reports claiming that the government is considering abolishing the controversial Act, while remaining non-committal on its position on the issue.

In a latest development, Bernama issued a notice to the media that Najib is to make an important announcement involving government policies at 8.30pm on RTM1 tomorrow.

It is believed to be relating to the ISA.
