Controversial Employment Bill passed, after furious debate

October 06, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 — The highly controversial Employment (Amendment) Bill 2011, after strong resistance on the Dewan Rakyat floor, was passed after five hours of debate tonight.

Minister of Human Resources Datuk S. Subramaniam tabled the second reading, said it would enable more systematic monitoring, recording and controlling of the labour market, primarily in isolated areas, Bernama Online reported.

Subramaniam (picture) in his winding up assured MPs that sub-contractor registration will ensure outsourcing did not become the culture.

Labour supply, worker recruitment and welfare falling under employers became major contentions as Pakatan Rakyat (PR) MPs wanted the bill not passed.

Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (PKR-Kuala Langat), M.Kulasegaran (DAP-Ipoh Barat) and Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj (PSM-Sungai Siput) were vocal in their opposition.

Abdullah said the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) was equally in opposition to the bill.

Datuk Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) and Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar (BN-Rembau) held strong support for the government’s bill.

The Dewan continues sitting tomorrow.
