Free Public Lecture by Ambiga Sreenevasan hosted by the Asian Law Centre and the Melbourne Law School, The University of Melbourne

‘Electoral Reform and the Quest for Democracy in Malaysia’

In this talk, Ambiga Sreenevasan explores the days prior to and after 9 July 2011, the significance of the rally, and whether the government’s recently announced undertaking to amend or repeal some of the most oppressive laws is a reason for Malaysians to hope for a more democratic future. Ambiga also emphasises the need for continued pressure on the government to fulfil Bersih 2.0's 8 demands before the 13th General Elections.

Closing remarks: “It is not power that corrupts, but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it. And fear of the scourge of power, corrupts those who are subject to it” -Aung San Suu Kyi

“...by the way to come and kudos to Global Bersih, I must mention Global Bersih. I think Melbourne kicked it off, you were the first. (Applause) I think the wonderful thing about Global Bersih is, we didn’t think of it actually the Malaysian diaspora themselves who read about Bersih and came out and said ‘We want to do this’, so we now have a network called Global Bersih and you play an exceedingly important role.”

"If the government had joined us, it would have been wonderful for them. They would have had the youth and they could have been marching with the youth of the country. They chose not to do that. That is their choice."
