NRD's duplicate IC case settled out of court

An out-of-court settlement has been reached between parties involved in the civil suit against the government pertaining to the National Registration Department's issuance of a MyKad to an impostor.

Lawyer Yusfarizal Yusoff, who represented claimant Muhammad Daud Salleh, said the Oct 13 settlement involved compensation of an undisclosed amount of cash.

The government will also assist Muhammad Daud, 42, in changing all documentation following the issuance of a new MyKad with a new number to the taxi driver.

"The government has agreed to pay an amount which cannot be disclosed, issue a new MyKad with a different number and to delete all records relating to the old number," he said when contacted.

NONEYusfarizal (right) added that the court order will also be sent to those claiming repayments for loans and fine payments incurred by the impostor, while using his client's MyKad.

"But this is not part of the settlement," he said.

The lawyer added that since the duplicate has been rendered invalid, the NRD will not trace the imposter to retrieve the MyKad issued to him .

"If this person is still holding this card and using it, there is nothing much that can be done," he said.

'NRD was careless'

The claimant had sued the NRD the home minister and the government for "carelessness" in issuing his identity card to an imposter.

NRD identity card assistant director Ruslan Alias had during the trialtestified that the department had issued a duplicate of an Muhammad Daud's identity card to an imposter twice, in 1990 and 2004.

The trial was adjourned midway through Ruslan's testimony.

Muhammad Daud had been receiving notices of demand from banks, the Road Transport Department and city councils, for payment of loans which he did not take and compounds for offences he did not commit.

He had testified that someone claiming to have bought a car from him showed him a MyKad with the same number and his name but the mugshot was of someone else.
