Like a burnt out record, Prime Minister Najib Razak kept jumping his favorite racist song - that only BN could save the Malays and Islam. So carried away was he that he even called himself a "warrior" and according to his critics, the worst thing was that his audience - Muslim Pekida - appeared to swallow it - hook line and sinker, despite hearing the same claim hundreds of times.
Perhaps, the reason could be that Pekida consists mostly of Umno members, but even so, that it did not once question Najib why he allowed MCA president Chua Soi Lek to 'insult' Islam cast grave doubt on its sincerity.
Soi Lek had over the weekend predicted investors would flee Malaysia if hudud was made federal law because hudud was not fair to all, in particular women, and also prescribed outrageous punishments including beheading, amputation of limbs, stoning to death and whipping.
It drew another Umno-linked Malay-rights NGO, Perkasa, to tell Soi Lek to "watch his mouth".
“Soi Lek also said it is hard to attract investors because of Malaysia’s poor human rights records and of cruel punishments, this will also make investors flee,” Syed Hasan Syed Ali, the Perkasa secretary-general, had said in a statement.
Saving the Malays, saving Islam but allows Soi Lek free rein
But while Najib launched into full-fledged rhetoric of being the champion for his race and religion, he has not once cautioned MCA or Soi Lek. Pekida, too, kept quiet as a mouse as its members waited out Najib's overly melodramatic speech.
“What will happen to Muslims if the government changes? What will happen to Islam if we lose our strength? What will happen to the Malay rulers if we are no longer there to honour them? What will happen to our descendants if we cannot fight for policies that protect them?” said Najib, who is also the Umno president. He was speaking at a Pekida function.
“Without having power, they have defiled the Malay rulers. Without power, they have questioned policies to help Malays and Bumiputeras, which are always questioned by them. Without power, they can say they want to halve the civil service. Who will be affected? If hundreds of thousands of civil servants are sacked, who will be the victims?”
Bare-faced lies
Pakatan Rakyat leaders returned, ridiculing him for so blatantly twisting the truth and treating the Malays as fools.
"Yes, it is very disrespectful of Najib to behave as if Pekida and the Malays in general are so stupid. It also shows he is a world of his own and no longer able to differentiate between the truth and the untruth. As Pekida is also a Muslim body, it is sad that it failed to act true to its religion. Even Perkasa defends hudud, although Najib has insisted it will never be allowed in Malaysia," PKR vice president Chua Jui Meng told Malaysia Chronicle.
"That's fine considering the aversion of the non-Muslims but the greatest sin for Najib is that he talked about defending Islam and yet never once took to task someone like Soi Lek, who is openly twisting and creating more and more hatred for hudud than is warranted."
