Felda fight: Ministerial power to appoint Isa questioned

Felda fight: Ministerial power to appoint Isa questioned
The illegal membership status of Felda chairman Isa Samad in Koperasi Permodalan Felda continued to be questioned, with critics saying there was no excuse to justify the use of ministerial power in appointing Isa by ignoring cooperative by-laws.
Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism minister Ismail Sabri Yaacob admitted that he used his authority by exempting Isa from the qualification requirements to join KPF.
National Felda Settlers’ Children Association (ANAK) chairman Mazlan Aliman however accused Ismail of abusing his power.
“Isa is not qualified to be KPF chairman because he is not a settler, a family member of settler or permanent employee of Felda. What excuse Ismail has to exempt Isa from KPF’s by-laws?” he questioned.
PAS central committee member said such a move must be backed by good reason, such as during crisis.
Mazlan claimed that there would be a move to support Isa at KPF’s annual general meeting on June 20 to allow him to compel the cooperative to agree with Felda Global Venture Holding’s listing exercise.
“KPF is not included in the FGVH listing so they will make KPF agree to the listing,” he claimed.
Isa’s status as KPF chairman is said to be in violation of Section 43 of the cooperative rules and regulation.
Malaysian Cooperative Societies Commission however said nothing could be done since there was no law to overrule it.
ANAK said it was seeking a court declaration to anull Isa’s KPF membership.
