KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — Pakatan Rakyat (PR) alleged today Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s name was used in an attempt to buy over its MPs with promises of government projects after screening a video purportedly of former PKR leaders negotiating with representatives of an opposition lawmaker.
The clip was a continuation of a five-minute recording screened last week which former Kedah PKR Youth chief Zamil Ibrahim admitted he was “most likely” the man offering RM2 million to a PKR MP. He denied being a Barisan Nasional (BN) agent.
The additional portion screened today shows Zamil and another former PKR Youth leader mentioning “Wangsa Maju” had earlier agreed but “lepas tu dia increase... tapi dalam Barisan Nasional sudah ada dah (after that he increased... but BN already has).”
“Then directlah. Direct PM,” Zamil, who left PKR to join Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita), is heard saying after a discussion on how “projects depend on proposals.”
Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad (picture) then told reporters that “in the context of the discussion, Zamil could not have meant anything else. If not? Project manager?”
“Najib’s name is mentioned elsewhere in the video, but we will reveal that later,” the Selangor PAS deputy chief said when asked if there was any other proof to back the claim.
Klang MP Charles Santiago also called on the prime minister to “say that he has nothing to do with these efforts.”
Zamil, who has fallen out with the Kita leadership, had said it was his “ambition” and “intention” to topple PKR by whatever means, “just like it is Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s dream to take over Putrajaya”.
“But I do not work with BN; I am neither a BN agent nor a member of Umno. I vehemently deny that and demand Khalid Samad retract his accusation.
“But to use my service to destroy PKR, I feel it is a noble cause, there is pride in that... it would even be my religious duty to destroy a party that I feel is lost,” he told The Malaysian Insider when contacted.
“The man in the video, it is most likely me but I cannot be absolutely certain. It could be a friend of mine. But the back of the head does look like mine... the video, however, does not show the stomach,” he added.
PR leaders had alleged recently that one of its MPs was offered up to RM2 million to defect to BN and had named Zamil as one of the agents employed by BN to broker the deal.
They had released a five-minute video of a purported meeting between the lawmaker’s representatives and the BN agents, which they said was recorded in a Klang Valley restaurant “around the time others left PKR”.
None of the five seen in the video could clearly be identified, with the faces of the PR MP’s two representatives blurred out.
“Two million is not enough,” one of the MP’s representatives is heard saying.
“We only get loose change,” the former PKR man replies before another individual, who the opposition lawmakers said was also a BN agent, said that projects could also be included in the package.
PKR’s Merbok MP Datuk Rashid Din also told reporters today he had been approached by Zamil, who he called “an old friend” to defect but said he replied jokingly, “do you have RM50 million?”
Rashid was also mentioned by Zamil in today’s extended video when the latter listed a number of PKR leaders he was friends with.
“Now there are about 31 but I feel more than half... will not be listed again,” Zamil said, which Khalid said was a reference to the number of MPs PKR had before the spate of defections saw six federal lawmakers and several state assemblymen leave the party.
