Police seize 107 NRD forms used for applying for MyKad, five of them with thumbprints and photos attached
TAWAU: A National Registration Department (NRD) officer from Putrajaya was among 19 people detained in connection with a MyKad application scam uncovered by the Tawau police.
The officer was detained following the detention of sixteen people including a 29-year-old Filipina at Hotel Monaco here on May 25 at about 11pm, police here revealed.
District acting police chief ASP Keong Ho Eng said the group was believed to be “conducting documentation fraud of NRD’s documents”.
He said police from the commercial crime unit raided a room at the hotel and found sixteen people inside including four customers.
Three three men, including the 52-year-old NRD officer, were detained after more information was received.
Among others detained were 18 men and one woman. Nine of the men detained were Malaysians, eight Pakistanis, an Indonesian and a Filipina aged between 29 to 52 years.
Keong said police seized 107 NRD forms used for applying for the Mykad and five of the forms already with thumbprints and photos attached.
Also seized were five cheque books, nine copies of birth certificates, two BR1M application forms, a stamp-pad and RM1,000 in cash.
He said the group is believed to charge applicants between RM1,000 and RM5,000 for processing the document and is also believed to have cheated victims’ in Lahad Datu and other districts.
Keong said police have enough evidence to charge three of the men – a local from Tawau and two Malaysians from the peninsula in court for cheating and also for the intention to cheat.
He said the modus operandi of the group appeared to be to offer Mykad application services to the thousands of poor illegal immigrants who have flooded the state in search of a better life.
Keong urged those with information on similar cases are urged to inform the police.
The arrests comes just days after Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak gave the go-ahead for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the massive number of foreigners residing in the state who allegedly have been granted citizenship and have been found to be voting in elections.
