SABAH LEADERS HAIL RCI ISSUE

KOTA KINABALU: Several Sabah leaders hailed the setting up of a royal commission of inquiry to probe the issue of illegal immigrants in the state, with some describing it as a most welcome “Kaamatan” (harvest) festival gift.

The positive feedback for the setting up of the RCI, announced earlier Friday by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, came from Sabah Umno, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Organisation (UPKO) and Sabah MIC.
Sabah Umno Deputy Liaison Chief Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak described the RCI as a precious Kaamatan gift for the people of Sabah and said it showed the government’s seriousness in wanting to solve the perennial illegal immigrant problem once and for all.

“I believe every section of society in the state would be very happy with this announcement and I hope Sabahans will accept the decision with an open heart,” he told Bernama.

PBS Deputy President, Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, hailing the RCI establishment as “much welcome news for the people of Sabah”, said the people of the state had been eagerly waiting for the announcement. (BERNAMA)

  11. Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin aserted that the perennial issue of illegal immigrants in Sabah must be handled in a collective manner and at the same time resolved wisely.

This issue has been taken seriusly both by the State and Federal Governments and have taken integrated action to address the situation.

Therefore it is deemed crucial that all parties, including the general populous must render their cooperation to ensure the issue is resolved.

The problem must be settled together and wisely, everyone must be prepared to render firm co-operation to ensure the illegal immigrant issue would be overcome for the sake of our wellbeing and prosperity.

The illegal immigrant issue has become a focal point among the State Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties and almost all have agreed to the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate it.

  12. The government has agreed to set up a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate problems related to illegal immigrants in Sabah, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak announced recently.

This is indeed a positive indicator that the government was committed to resolving the issue as it could affect the well-being of the people of Sabah.

Sabahans OUGHT to take advantage of this RCI and together with the government find the strategies and best approaches to tackle the problems concerned.

  13. Information Chief, Datuk Johnny Mositun of PBS would like to urge the Minister-in-charge-of law who was reportedly assigned to prepare the necessary such as the Terms of Reference (TOR) and commission panel members to do so as soon as possible.

This is to enable Sabah's cry for justice and punishment for wrongdoers and those behind the treachery can be meted out accordingly.

It must be treated with urgency and not wait until the matter gets worse and beyond control.

The question of the efficiency if this Royal Commission is still too early to determined due to the a fact that the Royal Commission of being restricted by the Term Of Reference. Until this TOR has been finalized, one can only speculate, just as before before the anouncement of the RCI.

The way I see it, This RCI is not a definite solution to the question of illegal immigrants; but I believe that this RCI serves to look into the issue that concerns it.

Hopefully with the findings of this form of public inquiry, it will have a significant impact on policy as well as action plans burrently undertaken both by state and federal level to handle this question.
