KOTA KINABALU, Aug 13 — United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun and Murut Organisation (Upko) Komulakan chief Ewon Benedict said Sabah leaders and residents should appreciate the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants in Sabah as it could resolve the issue.
While conveying his thanks to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s commitment to forming the RCI, Ewon, who represents the younger generation, said the issue of illegal immigrants and problems that cropped up from their presence in Sabah was an issue of concern in the movement.
“Najib is the first prime minister to commit positively towards setting up the RCI which has long been proposed by political parties in Sabah,” he said in a statement to Bernama here today.
He hoped the six-member panel would fulfil the aspirations and expectations of the Sabah people in tackling the influx of illegal immigrants.
Last Saturday, Najib announced the terms of reference for the RCI chaired by former chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Steve Shim Lip Kiong, which he said had received the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Ewon said the Upko Komulakan movement, through the party’s main committee, was ready to provide co-operation to the RCI.
Meanwhile, Sabah Puteri Umno chief Musliati Moslimin said the commission, made up of individuals from various legal backgrounds, would help ensure a complete investigation which was not politicised.
She complimented the setting up of the commission, when contacted by Bernama.
The RCI sees Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry secretary-general Datuk Saripuddin Kasim as secretary.
Its four commissioners are former Universiti Malaysia Sabah vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kamaruzaman Ampon, former Sabah attorney-general Tan Sri Herman Luping, former state secretary Datuk KY Mustafa and Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation deputy chairman Datuk Henry Chin Poy Wu. — Bernama

DeleteRCI is for the entire country not only for Sabah.
