'Merdeka March for Jalan Sultan' on N-Day eve

The Preservation of Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang Committee (PJSBBC) will hold a rally on the eve of National Day in a move to continue pressuring the government to preserve the street from the effects of construction works for the MRT project.

NONEPJSBBC chairperson Stanley Yong (second from left in photo) announced that the rally, called ‘Merdeka March for Jalan Sultan’, will be held at 8.30pm next Thursday at Jalan Sultan.

During the event, Yong said, the participants would gather at Gospel Hall before moving to Standium Merdeka for the symbolic linking of hands from the stadium all the way down to the Yan Keng Benevolent Dramatic Association building.

Later, the participants will march together towards the Klang bus station, next to the Pasar Seni LRT station, which has been demolished to pave the way for the construction of an underground MRT station.

“It could be a very different scene next year and so if we need to admire the good looks of Jalan Sultan, probably we have to do it now.

“Hopefully, on the eve of Merdeka Day, we will have a very peaceful night at Jalan Sultan, and we will make use of the peace to gather together, to sing some songs, even dance.
“And we want to recall the glory days of Jalan Sultan that has lasted about a century,” Yong added.
To make way for ‘Janji Demokrasi’
This is the second gathering announced by civil society groups to be held on the night before National Day.
The ‘Janji Demokrasi’ (Promise of Democracy) gathering will be held on 10pm at Dataran Merdeka on the very same night.
Yong said the committee will intentionally end their event before the ‘Janji Demokrasi’ gathering so that the participants can join the following event.
Yong said all of the previous events held by the PJSBBC easily attracted between 500 and 2,000 people to attend, and this time he expected more people to turn up as the next day is a public holiday.
