Perkasa wants Mano punished for insulting Chong Wei
Legal action must be taken against Kota Alam Shah assemblyperson M Manoharan for insulting badminton star Lee Chong Wei, as it is not sufficient for him to merely apologise, says Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali.
"He had the satisfaction of belittling people and merely needed to apologise later. For Perkasa, those who commit an offence should not be forgiven without legal action being taken," Ibrahim said in a statement today.
Manoharan (right), in a string of tweets, disparaged Lee after he took the silver medal in the Olympic Games men's bandminton final, and later apologised for it after netizens voiced their outrage.
The Malay rights pressure group said it has been becoming a trend lately for people to commit serious offences, including insulting Islam, Malays, the royalty and the country, but the culprits get away unpunished after an apology.
"Perkasa is concerned that individuals may act beyond the law because they are unhappy that the authorities did not take the necessary action. If this happens, it would surely start racial riots, since many of these incidents touch on issues of race and religion," Ibrahim said.
Examples of such incidents, he said, were musician Namewee's parody of the national anthem in 2007 and the handing out of caricatures deemed insulting to the companions of Prophet Muhammad by a tuition centre teacher in Johor.
