Sabah BN senator expected to defect today

A day after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s visit to Sabah, another BN representative, Senator Maijol Mahap, is expected to defect today.

wilfred bumburing quit upko 290712 01Maijol had on July 29 raised eyebrows when he appeared along side opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on stage at the defection ceremony of Tuaran MP Wilfred Bumburing (centre in photo).

Beaufort MP Lajim Ukin had similarly defected to the opposition on the same day.

Maijol had at the ceremony announced his intention to quit Upko but did not say whether he would formally align himself with Pakatan Rakyat.

However, a senior PKR source confirmed that the Upko vice-president will be making the move today.

Sabah BN’s Kota Belud MP Abdul Rahman Dahlan, too, had expected the defection.

“Senator Maijol Mahap from Upko is joining Anwar this Sunday. No surprise as he announced leaving Upko two weeks ago with Wilfred Bumburing,” he said in a Twitter posting.

It is unclear whether Maijol is to join Pakatan but it is likely he would align himself with the opposition through Sabah-based Pakatan-friendly organisations under the banner of the Sabah Reform Front (SRF).

In the double defection last month, it was announced that Wilfred will lead the Angkatan Perubahan Sabah while Lajim would take charge of Pakatan Perubahan Sabah under the auspices of SRF to help garner local support for the opposition coalition.

  1. THE excitement among the loose coalition of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, DAP and Pas leaders over the "defection" of seversl BN Mps into their camp is understandable. The euphoria emanates from their anticipation that it would lead to a so-called domino-effect in Barisan Nasional, which, however, has yet to happen. In fact, political development in the opposition camp in Sabah suggests that while its leadership are rejoicing, some of its divisional and grassroots officials appear to be fuming.

  2. Some divisional leaders, particularly from PKR, are concerned that the two lawmakers' move to align with their camp may throw a spanner in the works of the opposition's hope of loosening BN's grip in Sabah. Bumburing, who is Tuaran member of parliament and his Beaufort counterpart, Lajim, announced their decision to support the opposition through a new political platform called the Sabah Reform Front last Sunday, in the presence of PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Bumburing, a former Sabah deputy chief minister, also resigned from the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko), which he is the founding deputy president. As for Lajim, he has relinquished his Umno supreme council seat and as Beaufort BN chairman, but wants to remain as an Umno member and keep his deputy federal minister's post.

    1. Memang sudah kebiasaan bila menjelang PRU. ini bukan sesuatu yang menghairankan. cuma tindakan mereka ni membuatkan rakyat keliru dan kurang yakin.

  4. UPKO President Bernard Dompok gave the assurance that no more MPs and state assemblymen from the party would defect to the opposition.
As such, rumours and speculation on the defection of more Sabah politicians should stop, said the Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities.

    2. Banyak lagi yang akan keluar dari Bn rasanya. Ini pasti memberi cabaran giat untuk Najib untuk mengekalkan kedudukan di Sabah.

  5. Even Upko Treasurer-General Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh on Tuesday denied he will be joining former party deputy president Datuk Wilfred Bumburing and align himself with opposition Pakatan Rakyat.
