Sabah folk 'grateful' for PM's 'gutsy' move: WHO SAYS?
A PRIME minister with guts. That was the general consensus among Sabah Barisan Nasional leaders on Datuk Seri Najib Razak after he announced the terms of reference (ToR) for the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate the problem of illegal immigrants in the state over the weekend.
The word "guts" was indeed most appropriate to amplify the prime minister's brave decision to agree to the formation of the much-awaited RCI and for coming up with a comprehensive ToR to get to the root of the problem and resolve it once and for all.
It must be noted that the announcement was made in the wake of certain statements belittling the need to set up the RCI.
Leading a chorus of praises was Chief Minister and state BN chairman Datuk Seri Musa Aman, who described Najib as a leader who walked the talk and fulfilled his promises.
To Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, the prime minister has once again shown the people of Sabah that he hears them.
United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Organisation president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok was even bolder in his assessment of Najib.
Saying it (setting up of the RCI) was better late than never, Dompok said he had worked under three prime ministers and Najib was the only one willing to form the RCI.
Parti Bersatu Sabah deputy president Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili described Najib as a true blue statesman for taking the bull by its horns and working to resolve the long overdue problem.
Noting that certain personalities had deemed the set-up of the RCI as pointless, Ongkili said Najib had shown that he had a mind of his own and the interests of the people of Sabah at heart.
Liberal Democratic Party president Datuk Liew Vui Keong believed that the people of Sabah were grateful that Malaysia had a decisive prime minister.
Overall, it was a relief not just to the state BN leaders but also to all Malaysians in the state that the eight-point ToR for the RCI was generally what they had expected.
With the ToR and composition of the RCI unveiled, the focus now is to ensure that the desired objectives are met.
The RCI should be allowed to perform its task without any distraction and all concerned should render their full cooperation.
It is regrettable that some quarters had cast doubts on the ability of the RCI even before it has started investigations, and despite the fact that it is made up of learned and experienced people with no political leanings.
As expected, the opposition has again shown its true colours by politicising the formation of the RCI. Its attitude is tantamount to looking down at the integrity and credibility of the RCI, which is headed by former chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Steve Shim Lip Kiong.
It is also most unfair for leaders of the opposition, especially Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to make an issue of the six months given to the RCI to conduct investigations, which it says is too long.
They should recognise that unravelling and probing a problem that has haunted the state for decades will take time.
Perhaps, the opposition is getting jittery as Anwar, unlike Najib, did not lift a finger to find a solution to the problem when he was deputy prime minister in the 1990s.
