KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Malaysian Association of China Students Alumni (MACSA) will meet the Chinese media soon to explain the actual position on controversial rap singer Wee Meng Chee or Namewee’s video clip which was insulting to China’s badminton star, Lin Dan.
Its president, Adam Hung, said he would clarify that the clips were nothing more than a personal expression of Namewe.
“Namewee’s video had made people in China feel angry and upset because the video clip was insulting to China’s badminton star, Lin Dan.
“MACSA will approach and inform the Chinese media that it was only an individual’s action but we believe his action would not affect bilateral relations between China and Malaysia,” he told reporters here, today.
Recently, Namewee uploaded a video clip online that contained abuses in Hokkien against Lin Dan after Datuk Lee Chong Wei lost to the Chinese player in the men’s singles badminton final of the London Olympics at the Wembley Arena.
This clip subsequently spread throughout the Chinese online media including major forums and had caused much resentment among Chinese fans in China.
Asked whether they would take legal action on the singer, Adam said that they would not do so because Namewee had apologised through his Facebook page recently.
“...But as a public figure, Namawee should be more sensitive to what he was doing,” he added.
Prior to this, Lee had apologised to the Chinese badminton fans on the dissemination of the video clip.
“I’m sorry about that video, I know nothing about that song too, I am here to say sorry to everyone, hopefully Chinese fans can forgive this,” said Lee on his account at Chinese microblogging site weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter. — Bernama
