Thieves cart away bank ATM on raya morning

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Using what was believed to be oxy-acetylene flame and a metal cutter, a gang of thieves carted away an automated teller machine (ATM) from a kiosk in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) here on the first day of Aidilfitri.
While there were signs of a failed attempt to steal another ATM at the kiosk, a cash depositing machine was left untouched in the incident about 2.30am.
Five closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV), including those installed on the machines at the kiosk, were found to have been sprayed with black paint.
The police believe the move was to conceal the identities of the thieves while they were dismantling the ATM.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said the break-in came to light when a passer-by spotted a fire at the kiosk before informing the fire and rescue department.
He said a team of firemen in an engine arrived at the scene about 4am to put out the blaze which was believed to have been caused by the use of oxy-acetylene flame, coupled with a portable metal-cutting machine, at the kiosk.
The kisok has a cash depositing machine and two ATMs.
"The cash depositing machine was left untouched while an ATM was taken away. There were signs of a failed attempt to steal the second ATM," noted Ku.
He was speaking to reporters at an open house held by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman here.
