Minister dithers over prosecution of Umno-linked firms

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob refused today to offer the government’s commitment to probe two Umno-linked firms for infringing company laws, after opposition MPs raised hue and cry in Parliament over the “selective” prosecution of rights group Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM).
The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister (picture), when winding up debate on Budget 2013, however, pledged that all companies, regardless of their political affiliations, would be investigated if they failed to comply with the Companies Act 1965.
“We will investigate all companies, regardless of which... I do not want to be specific to that one case only,” he told Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR-Lembah Pantai).
The PKR vice-president had demanded the minister’s assurance that YGP Holdings Sdn Bhd and the National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) would be investigated for failing to file their audited accounts.
YGP Holdings’ directors include Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Kota Belud MP Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, while the NFCorp is owned by the family members of Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
Dissatisfied with Ismail Sabri’s answer, Nurul Izzah demanded the minister specifically state if his ministry’s probe would include both firms.
“My net is bigger,” Ismail Sabri replied.
“Yes, and I would ask that your net includes YGP,” Nurul Izzah retorted.
“Any company that commits offences under the Companies Act 1965 will be investigated,” the minister replied.
