Singapore university to probe Malaysian scholar over sex blog

SINGAPORE, Oct 17 ― The ASEAN scholar who posted sexually explicit videos and pictures of him and his girlfriend online will be investigated by the National University of Singapore’s Board of Discipline (BOD).

“The student concerned has been served a notice of Board of Discipline (BOD) inquiry. The BOD will look into the matter and take appropriate disciplinary actions,” said an NUS spokesperson.

Alvin Tan Jye Yee, 24, stirred controversy after posting the obscene material on his blog, which has since been deactivated. Videos and images, however, have been copied and circulated elsewhere.

In statement today, the NUS confirmed that the student is with the NUS Faculty of Law and on an ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship.

“He is currently on leave of absence and is not receiving scholarship funds,” said the spokesperson.

Adding that the NUS “adopts a rigorous process” in selecting its scholars, the university said it “takes a serious view of the conduct of the student concerned”.

The university added that his actions are “not a reflection of all our scholars”.

“All NUS students are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible manner and should not be associated with offensive behaviour. Any student found in breach of the University’s Code of Student Conduct will be disciplined,” said the spokesperson. ― Today
