Teresa Kok, Chamil Wariya agree to settle RM30m suit out of court
KUALA LUMPUR- Seputeh member of parliament Teresa Kok and Malaysian Press Institute chief executive officer Datuk Chamil Wariya have agreed in principle to settle a RM30 million defamation suit out of court.
Counsel S.N Nair who appeared for Kok told reporters today that the terms of settlement were still being finalised.
"We will inform the details to the court on Monday," he said after the matter was mentioned before High Court judge Datuk Hamid Sultan Abu Backer.
Kok had filed the suit in 2008, over a fictional short story published in Mingguan Malaysia on Oct 12, 2008.
She named Chamil, who authored the alleged defamatory short story entitled “Politic Baru YB J” and Utusan Melayu Sdn Bhd as defendants.
The statement of claim stated that the article was in direct reference to Kok and that it was defamatory and libellous.
On the suit against Utusan Melayu, Nair said the parties were still discussing whether to settle the matter out of court.
"If nothing is achieved, we will go for trial on Monday," he said.
