ISA detainee loses job, family might lose house
The family of a secondary school teacher who was sacked following his detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA) is barely making ends meet after losing their main source of income in July.
According to the Anti-ISA Movement (GMI), the family of SMK Umas-umas teacher Bakar Baba has not been able to make mortgage installments of RM598 a month for the past five months.
“They now fear that if they will lose their shelter,” GMI coordinator Sykuri Razab said.
He said that Bakar's wife pays for the expenses of her four school-going children through help from friends.
Bakar, who was detained in Nov, 2011 for alleged involvement in a militant group, was sacked due to the detention.
According to Syukri, Bakar's wife Zahorna Abdul Razak has appealed to the disciplinary section of the education services commission.
Not convicted in court
However, the NGO was informed on Aug 3 that the matter will be discussed at an appeals council meeting, at a date which cannot be revealed. No news has been heard since.
“We urge the commission to review his sacking as it only causes suffering to his wife and chidren. He was sacked without being convicted of any crime.
“GMI considers Bakar's sacking as baseless and unreasonable,” he said, adding that GMI is collecting donations for the family.
Bakar is among 29 detainees still held at the Kamunting detention centre, near Taiping, Perak.
The Internal Security Act has been replaced with the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, which came into force on July 31, 2012. Despite this, the ISA detainees can continue to be held at the discretion of the home minister.
