No Psy, BN left red-faced during yee sang toss

Blame has been pinned on “a minister” for having caused the Penang BN embarrassment when South Korean mega-star Psy did not join dignitaries on stage to toss yee sang before his performance in Penang on Monday.

NONEPenang Gerakan Youth chief Oh Tong Keong(left) - the organising chairperson for the BN’s Chinese New Year open house - said the minister had told the emcee to invite Psy to toss yee sang.

Given that the minister had not informed the organising committee ahead of time - which, in turn, was not able to brief the top South Korean singer - Oh said he could understand the awkwardness that Psy must have felt when the announcement was made.

NONE"The event company must follow the norms. Psy(right), as a mega-star, also has standards which we must follow," Oh toldMalaysiakini.

“That was an ad hoc suggestion which caused us embarrassment. I later asked the emcee why she had called Psy on stage, and she said she had acted on a minister’s instructions.”

Although Oh declined to name the minister, there were three on stage - Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koon, Umno supreme council member Nor Mohamed Yakcop and MCA vice-president Ng Yen Yen.

China Press today quoted a source who claimed that “a senior woman officer” was behind the announcement.

During this segment of the event, a table was wheeled on stage and a plate of yee sang was placed on it.

BN leaders were kept waiting, as they clapped and looked around, after the emcee’s announcement, but eventually proceeded with tossing the traditional dish without him.

NONEAfter waiting five minutes for Psy, the leaders - who included BN head and premier Najib Abdul Razak and former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi - left the stage.

This wasrecorded on video, which has been uploaded to YouTube and which has become the butt of netizens’ jokes.

During Najib’s speech at the open house, there were red faces among the BN when the crowd shouted back a resounding “No!” three times to Najib’s question, “Are you ready for BN?”

This was a reference to the coalition’s move to win back Penang, which it lost to Pakatan Rakyat in the 2008 general election.
Najib has also had to fend off questions as to whether public funds were used to bring in Psy, whose management company has sinceconfirmed that the payment did not come from the government.
