PM Najib's approval rating continues to slide

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's approval rating, according to independent pollster Merdeka Centre, has slipped further as the eve of general election approaches.

Of the 1,021 voters polled between Jan 23 and Feb 6, 61 percent of respondents were satisfied with the premier's performance, down 2 points from a similar survey held in December last year.

According to Merdeka Centre, the declined is mainly attributed to a 4 point drop in satisfaction among Malay voters, down from 77 percent a month earlier.

Chinese and Indian satisfaction on Najib's performance was at status quo, at 37 percent and 75 percent respectively.

Merdeka Centre noted that the survey was conducted following the Jan 12 opposition rally at Stadium Merdeka, the start of the Royal Commission of Inquiry hearing in Sabah, criticisms against the federal government coming from businessman Deepak Jaikishan and former police chief Musa Hassan.

His approval rating was at the highest point, at 71 percent, in December 2011.
