BN backstabbed me, says Gerakan man

Gerakan member A Mohan says he may join Kita.
GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan member A Mohan, who was not picked to contest the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat in the upcoming general election, may join Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita).
He said negotiations were going on between him and Kita leaders.
“I will announce my decision on whether to join Kita soon.
“For now, I’m quitting Gerakan and will stand as an independent candidate for Batu Kawan parliamentary constituency and also a state seat.
“I will reveal the state seat on nomination day [April 20].
“I don’t rule out contesting under Kita if talks go on smoothly,” he told reporters at his service here tonight.
Barisan Nasional has announced that former Penang Indian Chambers of Commerce head, lawyer N Gobalakrishnan, who is also a local, as the Batu Kawan candidate.
Mohan, 53, who has been a party member since 1983, felt betrayed.
He cut off his Gerakan membership card with a pair of scissors before reporters to confirm his decision to quit the party, which he joined as a youth 30 years ago.
He will close down his Taman Semilang branch, under the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency, with immediate effect.
All 192 members of the branch also quit the party together with him.
Several Gerakan members from Simpang Ampat also quit.
Besides being a BN constituency coordinator and branch head, Mohan is also Gerakan state elected committee member and Permatang Pauh division vice-chairman.
‘Chauvinist’ party
Mohan will submit his resignation notice to the Gerakan state office tomorrow.
Earlier, he and his supporters took down all BN flags and banners and brought them back to his service centre in Taman Kasawari, Simpang Ampat.
They also held a peaceful gathering in support of Mohan.
“I spent so much time, money and energy for the party and this was what I got in return.
“Gerakan leaders did not even tell me that I had not been picked. They did not even say thank you to me for all my hard work ,” said Mohan.
Mohan has been working hard at the grassroots level in Batu Kawan for past four years since he was appointed as the constituency BN coordinator.
He said Gerakan state chief Dr Teng Hock Nan promised him the seat more than two years ago.
He said the promise was to return favour for his support for Teng who faced a no-confidence vote by Gerakan members on Oct 10, 2010.
Mohan said he delivered the Indian votes to ensure Teng survived the vote.
But some months ago Teng has asked Mohan to make way for him for the seat.
“When I refused, the Gerakan leaders backstabbed me,” he claimed.
He named Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koon, secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow and Dr Teng Nan as the “backstabbers”.
Mohan said even a month ago, Umno state secretary Omar Faudzar had told him that the “seat was yours”.
He urged Indian members to quit Gerakan, which he labelled as a “chauvinist” party, and join other parties that would take care of Indian interests.
Teng, who is also BN state chief, has said that all component parties would sack any members who sabotaged the coalition or stood as independent candidates in the election.
“What’s there for Gerakan to expel me? I resign,” said Mohan.
