Sarawak BN opts for eight ‘new’ faces


PBB will be fielding Rabiah Wang,a former district officer, in the Kota Samarahan parliamentary constituency won by Chief Minister Taib Mahmud's son Sulaiman in the 2008 polls.
KUCHING: Sarawak Barisan Nasional has retained 23 of its incumbents to defend their seats in the May 5 parliamentary election.
It also announced eight new faces to contest in Mas Gading, Bandar Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Saratok, Sibu, Hulu Rajang, Miri and Baram.
The candidates are Nogeh Anak Gumbek (Mas Gading); Tan Kai (Bandar Kuching); Rabiah Wang (Kota Samarahan); William Mawan Ikom (Saratok); Lau Lee Ming (Sibu); Ugak Anak Kumbong (Hulu Rajang); Sebastian Ting (Miri) and Anyi Ngau (Baram).
In announcing the new faces here today, Sarawak BN chairman Taib Mahmud said the only new woman nominated was Rabiah, a native of Kota Samarahan was also a former district officer in the constituency and an ex-Sarawak administrative officer.
Taib said BN had chosen to retain its incumbents in 23 seats as they were still well received by their respective constituents.
He said Sarawak BN was confident of winning a two-thirds majority through the combination of new and old faces.
Bernama, meanwhile, reported that among the incumbents from Taib’s Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) were its senior vice-president Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also Natural Resources and Environment Minister and Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (Santubong).
Others are Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy Minister Fadillah Yusof (Petra Jaya), Tourism Deputy Minister James Dawos Mamit (Mambong) and Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Deputy Minister  Rohani Karim (Batang Lupar).
Other Sarawak coalition partners also retained most of its incumbents.
Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) vice-president Joseph Salang, who is also Information, Communications and Culture Deputy Minister and his party colleague Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister Joseph Entulu will defend the Julau and Selangau parliamentary seats, respectively.
In the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) line-up, party deputy president Richard Riot, who is also Deputy Foreign Minister, is set to defend the Serian parliamentary seat and Works Deputy Minister Yong Khoon Seng will contest in Stampin
