EC denies link to ballot slip pix online

EC denies link to ballot slip pix online
PUTRAJAYA - The Election Commission (EC) has denied allegations that a picture of a ballot paper circulating on social media came from the commission.
EC secretary Datuk Kamaruddin Mohamed Baria said EC has lodged a report over the matter at the police headquarters here today.
On Tuesday, a picture of a ballot slip went viral over Facebook with allegations that EC failed to manage the ballot paper and that it did not appoint polling agents for candidates and parties to witness the voting process.
Kamaruddin could not ascertain the authenticity of the picture, and is leaving it to the authorities to investigate the matter.
He said while it is not wrong to take photos of the ballot paper, it is an offence to post it online and spread misleading information.
Asked whether the act will be investigated under the Election Offences Act or the Penal Code, Kamaruddin said EC will leave it to the police to decide.
On whether EC will enlist the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission to probe the matter, Kamaruddin said it is best for the police to first conclude their investigations into the matter.
Kamaruddin also denied advance voting has already been carried out for those eligible in that category, as that will only take place on April 30.
On concerns that a ballot may be considered spoilt if it is accidentally stained with the indelible ink, he said voters can request for a fresh ballot slip if that happens.
