Expert committee on Lynas established
Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry has formalised the establishment of a project operations monitoring committee on Lynas’ rare earths refinery in Gebeng, Pahang.
The committee will act as an advisory and monitoring body for the compliance of the conditions outlined in various licences issued by the respective authorities. The committee will also look into:
1. Management of the security measures adopted;
2. Safety standards for all activities at the project site;
3. Level of disturbance and/or threats to the health of workers and/or surrounding community;
4. Level of impact on the environment and, when necessary, to discuss and recommend appropriate mitigation measures;
5. Ensure systems and equipment are functional and well maintained;
6. Ensure ,aintenance of the Lynas building structure; and
7. Raise public awareness and understanding of the Lamp project.
The establishment of the committee is among 31 recommendations of the parliamentary select committee on the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp).
The committee will be headed by Malaysian Insitute of Chemistry president Soon Ting Kueh while Universiti Malaysia Pahang deputy vice-chancellor Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz has been appointed committee spokesperson.
This was revealed by the ministry today in a press statement. Other committee members were not named, but they were said to comprise government agency officers, NGO representatives and other relevant experts.
