Johor DAP chief denies resigning in protest

Johor DAP chairperson Dr Boo Cheng Hau today denied the rumour that he has tendered his resignation as state chief in protest against the alleged intervention of party's secretary-general Lim Guan Eng over the deployment of candidates there.

NONEHowever, he called on the party’s central leadership to respect the recommendations made by the state leadership.

In a statement issued this morning, Boo (left) said he has no intention of resigning and will fight together with DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang in the Gelang Patah parliamentary constituency in this general election.

Boo is Skudai assemblyperson, one of the two state seats under Gelang Patah.

He made the same denial during a press conference in Skudai this morning, stressing that he has no qualms with Guan Eng.

It is an open secret that Boo is not in Guan Eng's good books, with the latter having once even labeled Boo as a “dissident”.

Several Chinese dailies today reported that Boo, together with deputy state chief Norman Fernandez and secretary Tan Chen Choon, have tendered their resignations as Johor DAP candidates selection committee members during the state committee meeting last Sunday.

The resignations were to protest against Guan Eng's intervention in the selection of candidates in the southern state, claimed the reports.
'Paving way' for central leadership
Quoting sources, the reports pointed out that the initial deployment of candidates by the state leadership were overruled by the central leadership, especially in the moving of DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) national secretary-general Tan Hong Pin from Pekan Nenas state seat to Mengkibol at the eleventh hour.

tan hong pinIt was reported that the central leadership preferred Tan (right) to contest Mengkibol, a DAP-incumbent state seat under Kluangparliamentary constituency, to help boost the campaign of party's election strategist Liew Chin Tong, who moved from Bukit Bendera parliamentary seat in Penang to Kluang in a bid to create a political change in Johor.

Boo admitted the resignation but explained that it was nothing unusual as the three-member committee, elected by the state committee, has completed its mission after submitting the candidates list to the central leadership on April 3.

“After three years of thorough evaluation, including visiting branches, interviewing candidates and collecting feedback from the people, we have submitted the candidates list.

“(The) Resignation is to pave way for the central leadership to completely take over the matter. The state selection committee believes the central leadership will respect its recommendations,” he added.
