The former MCA president, in a short announcement at a restaurant some 200m from Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, called on his supporters not to lose spirit or feel disappointed but to trust that he had not abandoned his work in Pandan.
“My choices — whether to continue my efforts for the people with the limited resources I have, or to spend big just for the general election... Therefore I choose to prioritise my programmes for the people,” he said.
“Do not lose spirit, do not be sad when I announce that I will not contest today for despite this, I will always be with you and my struggle for you is not over.”
Ong, the incumbent MP for Pandan, had earlier talked of the possibility of contesting as an independent, after Barisan Nasional (BN) left him out of its candidates list.
BN picked lawyer Gary Lim, who will face PKR’s Rafizi Ramli in Pandan.
