Youth: Police wrongly detained me, beat me up

A 26-year-old youth from Sentul says he was beaten up by a police officer at the Sentul police station despite the officer receiving orders to release him from custody.

Manimaran Monoharan said he was detained after a random check by police as he was driving in Sentul at 2.30am on April 9. Police told him he was on their "wanted list".

However, Manimaran said, the "wanted" tag was an old one and the case involving him had already been concluded.

He said he urged the officers to contact the case investigating officer from the Petaling Jaya police station to clear his name.

After spending nearly four hours in the station, Manimaran managed to contact the investigating officer himself and obtained clarification that his name was no longer on the "wanted list" and asked that he be released.
Officer had spent hours preparing documents

However, an officer at the Sentul police station, Manimaran said, told him that he had spent hours preparing documents to take Manimaran to the Jinjang police station lock-up, and therefore had no intention of letting him off so easily.

When he insisted on being released, Manimaran said, he was kicked and punched by the officer, resulting in hand and shoulder injuries before he was subsequently released from the station at 7.10am.

Manimaran lodged a complaint against the officer last Thursday, saying that he is able to identify the officer.

PKR Subang division secretary Manivanan Gowin, who is helping Manimaran and his family, urged that the case be investigated under the Penal Code.

Manivanan said cases such as this were yet more grounds why the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) had to be set up to investigate misconduct by the police.

This is not the first case of brutality linked to the Sentul police station in recent times.

Earlier this month, another youth complained he was investigated for attempted murder under the Penal Code while trying to run away from police officers who fired shots at his car right in front of the Sentul police station.
