PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional’s decision to field Perkasa leader Zulkifli Noordin for the Shah Alam parliamentary seat has even puzzled Anwar Ibrahim.
The Pakatan Rakyat supremo said that he is having difficulty understanding BN’s strategy in allowing Zulkifli to contest in the general election.
“It’s mind boggling. You ask anyone about Zulkifli and they will giggle out of cynicism,” said the former deputy prime minister at a press conference today.
Recently, BN chief Najib Tun Razak described Zulkifli as a winnable candidate and said that the Indian community had forgiven him for insulting Hinduism.
His deputy, Muhyiddin Yassin also defended Zulkifli’s candidacy, calling the latter “a man with calibre”
Last month, the Perkasa vice-president incurred the wrath of the Hindus after a video of him insulting the religion went viral on the Internet.
Zulkifli had since apologised.
Anwar claimed that Najib’s decision to field Zulkifli for the Shah Alam parliamentary seat has even left other Umno leaders stumped.
“Why is Najib so compelled to field him? Of course, you can hire some MIC fellows to kiss him but many Indians have expressed utter disgust to his candidacy,” he said.
