Contrary to the statements of the other cabinet ministers, Tourism Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz said today the cabinet had in fact agreed, last year itself, to repeal the Sedition Act.
"The Attorney-General's Chambers is in the process of looking into it and engaging stakeholders before coming out with a new law," Nazri told a press conference at the Parliament lobby.
He said he does not know why "any minister would go against" the announcement to repeal the act that was made by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak last year.
"It's a public commitment made by the prime minister. I don't see why any minister would go against it," Nazri said.
Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had urged that the sedition law stay in force, while Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam indicated this morning that the cabinet would discuss the law in future.

Asked about the contradicting statements, especially the one made by Subramaniam this morning, Nazri said that Subramaniam probably “doesn’t remember”.
“It was made last year, maybe he doesn’t remember. Maybe it’s (because of) so many cabinet meetings,” he said.
He said that there were no subsequent meetings about the Sedition Act.
“The PM did inform us that the AG’s Chambers will look into the matter,” he said.
Nazri was the de facto law minister in the previous cabinet when Najib made the announcement July last year and said that the Sedition Act will be replaced with the National Harmony Act.
Both Subramaniam and Zahid were also part of the previous cabinet, in their capacities as human resources minister and defence minister respectively.
“His statement still stands,” he said.
