Death came on a night out for drinks

When the wife of the latest death-in-custody victim Cheong Fook Meng received a call from her husband's handphone at 1.43am last Thursday, the last thing she expected was to hear a nurse from Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) asking her to come to the mortuary to identify Cheong's body.

"They told me my husband was dead, and that I had to come to the hospital to identify the body," said Julia Kwa Siew Woo, 46.

"At first I couldn't believe it. I thought he had been involved in an accident because he was in the emergency ward. I was traumatised, and fainted when I heard the news. I had to lie down to compose myself," Kwa said.

NONEShe had suspected nothing out of the ordinary that day. They had spoken over the phone in the afternoon and it was routine for Cheong to have a few drinks with friends, at night after work, she toldMalaysiakini.

So, upon hearing the nurse's voice telling her that her husband was dead, Kwa's vision began spinning out of focus.

Still in a state of shock, Kwa and her two daughters drove to the hospital mortuary, with the help of her stepson, Simon.

There, what was left of Cheong's physical remains were wrapped in cloth. Kwa's mind was devoid of thought or feeling as she peeled away the linens from his face.

"I couldn't think of anything. I could only hug him," she said.
'Husband's face was slightly black'
The distraught widow said she had to leave the room, but not before she noticed that her husband's face was "slightly black". Her daughter also said that his feet had been darkened, but was unsure of the cause.

It was difficult to believe that just a day earlier, Cheong, a project manager with a company dealing with fire alarm systems, had sat down with his daughters and reviewed their school report cards.

NONEKwa's stepdaughter, Doris Cheong Mei Yeng, 31, said eyewitnesses saw four policemen come to a restaurant on Jalan Imbi, and one of them kicked her father on his leg and brought him down for allegedly beating a red light nearby.

"Then, another policeman handcuffed him and one of them sat on him for about 30 minutes. Witnesses said they saw foam coming out of his mouth, and he was later taken to HKL and pronounced dead," Mei Yeng (left) said.

Kwa questioned the motive for apprehending her husband with violence if he had only beaten a red light.

"The police labelled him a suspect for jumping a red light. How is this an excuse to kill him?" she asked.

Kwa said the police did not find anything of suspicion when they examined Cheong's car after he had been detained that night.

"Obviously there's nothing wrong with my husband, but why did they handcuff him and label him a criminal?

"There is something very wrong with our laws if they can simply do that to him."

Kwa and her family have made a police report and also sought the help of Puchong MP Gobind Singh yesterday. She hoped Gobind, who is also a lawyer, would be able to assist in the family's search for answers.
Family has witnesss to help police

Gobind gave his assurance to the family that he would raise this matter with Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Parliament.

Kwa also told Malaysiakini that she was keen to find out how Cheong had died and she called on the police to show responsibility and relate how his death occurred.

Her family has also gathered evidence from witnesses and was willing to assist the police in their investigations.

They are also prepared to file a suit against the police and the government.

NONEPolice have said they willinvestigate Cheong's death.

Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainuddin Ahmad (left) toldBernama that Cheong was detained after a chase by two police patrol cars along Jalan Barat, off Jalan Imbi, about 12.15am on July 4.

"While making the arrest, police had to struggle with the driver of a Proton Waja before the suspect was finally subdued.

"However he was found weak and he was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital where he was pronounced dead," Zainuddin said in a media statement in Kuala Lumpur last Thursday night.

Zainuddin said based on the post-mortem, there was no sign of internal and external injuries on Cheong.
