Redelineation exercise 'will be publicised'

The Election Commission’s (EC) redelineation exercise is still in the early stages and proposed changes will be publicised, pledged Shahidan Kassim, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

NONEIn a written parliamentary reply to DAP’s Kota Melaka MP Sim Tong Him (right), he said the EC has thus far made no decisions on adding either parliamentary or state seats.

"The EC will first inform the speaker and the prime minister. Then, this will be publicised in at least one newspaper that reaches the affected voters,” Shahidan said.

The EC will receive feedback, including objections, for a month after notification of the proposed changes.

Sim had asked for details of the proposed redelineation exercise, slated to be carried out by the end of this year, and questioned how the exercise would stick to the ‘one person, one vote’ system.

NONEHe also asked the government to state the maximum and minimum voters allowed in any parliamentary constituency.

Shahidan (left)replied that the constitution does not set such limits but that the EC would follow the principles in Article 113 of the federal constitution, which factor in voting facilities and community ties.

The constitution stipulates that the redelineation process can only take place eight years after the previous one. The last exercise began in 2003 and was implemented in 2004.
